The Roles of Women in World War I and World War II

During both World War one and World War two women played a huge role. If it wasn’t for them and also some men, the outcome of the soldiers who lived and died would have been significantly different. In the next few paragraphs I’m going to talk about the women before ww1, during ww1 and 2 and the outcome they helped with after both.

Prior to ww1 women were taking on many roles outside of the home. Most were taking men’s positions in factories to help build weapons, and all of those women had to do that while taking care of the home and their family. Just over 1.7 million women worked in “domestic service”, “clothing trades”, and “textile manufacturing.” These things all helped the men in preparing for the First World War (1914). They were also teachers and they said that because men were going off to war that women would be taking over the men’s jobs.

At the beginning of ww1 over 6 million out of the 23 million women in Britain were working outside of the home, or away from the home providing for the soldiers and building weaponry. Thousands of other women were working in munitions factories, and put in large hangars to built aircraft. Some women had taken up knitting as to help for making socks and hampers for the soldiers on the front, as for the survival of the women they only worked for paid employment for the sake of their families.
