Comparing West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet

West Side story and Romeo and Juliet are both stories almost similar. West Side story takes place in New York City, Romeo and Juliet is set in Verona. Tony is the modern character of Romeo and Maria is the modern character of Juliet. The major conflict in both stories is that two opposing families Montague and Capulet’s and two rival gangs’ sharks and jets in which they do not agree of the relationship of their loved ones. The conflict is resolved in which one of the two couples killed themselves the other couple just one got killed.
Maria who is Bernardo sister leader of the sharks meets Tony a gangster from the jets in a school dance just like when Romeo and Juliet meet each other in the ball. They both dance together and then Bernardo notices that Maria is dancing with one of the jets like when Tybalt notices Romeo dancing with Juliet in the ball. The jets and the sharks have a rumble in which Bernardo kills Riff the leader of the jets and Tony try’s to stop it just like when Romeo try’s to stop Mercutio and Tybalt but Tybalt kills Mercutio.
Then Tony kills Bernardo because he killed Riff just like when Romeo goes after Tybalt because he killed Mercutio. Tony goes and finds Maria and he sings to her in the balcony of the apartment complex like when Romeo goes and looks for Juliet and sings to her in the balcony of her estate.
