Antagonists Which Gene Faces

You can tell that Finny is Gene’s antagonist just from the way Gene acts towards Finny in the book. The first time I recognized that Gene didn’t fancy Finny to well was when Finny and Gene were hanging around the pool and Finny decided that he was going to break the school record for swimming 100 yards. Gene was very jealous of that as later on he states “I found it. I found a single sustaining thought. The thought was, You and Phineas are even already. You are even in enmity. You did hate him for breaking that school swimming record, but so what? He hated you for getting an A in every course but one last term. You would have an A in that one except for him. Except for him.” (A Separate Peace John Knowles pg. 53) Finny’s fall from the tree. Gene is just filled up with so much hate and envy for Finny that when they were going to jump from the tree together Gene shakes the tree branch making Finny fall and breaking his leg.
Towards the very end of the book Gene actually does some things that lead to Finny’s death at the very end. When Finny actually listens to what happens and finds out that Gene shook the tree branch causing him to falls. He leaves the building, and falls down the stairs in the process breaking his leg. While the doctor was setting his leg back some bone marrow escaped and traveled to his heart killing him.
