Review of Various Books

Prim, 13-year-old Charlotte Doyle enters a controversial ship as a frightened, proper young lady. However, after being placed in the middle of an argument between the captain and his crew and being accused of murder, she emerges something much different. I loved this book and I think it would really appeal to students because of the similarities with Pirates of the Caribbean. The story is fascinating and very well written.

Artemis Fowl is an evil genius bent on extracting treasure and power from the fairy realm. His plan is foolproof . . . but perhaps not fairy-proof. The magical world, uniquely portrayed as being technologically advanced, comes back with a vengeance, and he is waiting. The characters in the book are unique, as is the plot, and I think it would interest most readers. The writing is accessible and I really enjoyed reading it.

Miri, age 13, is given the opportunity to leave her poor mountain community and join an academy designed to train and select the next princess of the kingdom. The plot may seem a little shallow on the surface, but this was actually my favorite novel I read for this course. I especially love what the novel says about individualism and relationships. I would definitely place it on a list of recommended reading.
